Why is my transmission overheating? 

If your transmission is overheating, we highly recommend you bring your truck in for service. Over time, transmission fluid breaks down and loses its ability to lubricate moving parts. When your transmission fluid fails to lubricate the component, there will be a significant increase in friction, hence the overheating issue. Fortunately, changing your fluid is typically an instant fix. However, if the issue persists, you may want to consider installing a transmission cooler. This is generally helpful for those who haul heavy cargo on a near daily basis. 

How often should I change my transmission fluid? 

The vast majority of heavy-duty truck manufacturers recommend you change your transmission fluid every 60 thousand miles if not hauling very much and every 30 thousand if hauling heavy cargo on a more frequent basis. A lot of people question why they shouldn’t change their transmission fluid at the same frequency as their engine oil, and the answer is actually quite simple. Your engine gets a lot hotter because it has a combustion chamber. Your transmission operates at a significantly cooler temperature and, as such, does not put too much stress on its fluid.
